The BC Hydro Power Outage RSS feed is a middle man between BC Hydro's official power outages website, and RSS. As of December 2008, BC Hydro has not yet built an RSS feed into their outage system and appears to have no intention of offering RSS or ATOM feeds for their customers to monitor outages that may affect their systems and operations beyond their mobile and web based interfaces.
The feed presents outages including location affected, cause of outage, estimated time to repair and coordinate data.
To access the RSS feed, use: http://www.bcwireless.net/xmlrpc/bch.outages.php?region=<region>, where region is one of the following:
- Northern
- Thompson/Shuswap
- Lower Mainland
- Okanagan/Kootenay
- North VI
- South VI
- Central Interior
ie:
http://www.bcwireless.net/xmlrpc/bch.outages.php?region=Northern
http://www.bcwireless.net/xmlrpc/bch.outages.php?region=Thompson/Shuswap
http://www.bcwireless.net/xmlrpc/bch.outages.php?region=Lower%20Mainland
http://www.bcwireless.net/xmlrpc/bch.outages.php?region=Okanagan/Kootenay
http://www.bcwireless.net/xmlrpc/bch.outages.php?region=North%20VI
http://www.bcwireless.net/xmlrpc/bch.outages.php?region=South%20VI
http://www.bcwireless.net/xmlrpc/bch.outages.php?region=Central%20Interior
This has been tested in Microsoft Outlook 2007, Viigo, Live Journal, Google Reader and other RSS aggregators. As this is an unofficial interface, it is expected to break should updates be made to BC Hydro's web services. We ask that you contact BC Hydro and insist on the addition of a native RSS feed in conjunction to using this RSS hackery.
